THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON WORLD HUNGER

2022 Special Competition

This is your chance to work as a team, think outside the box, and earn some money for your school's Model U.N. program.  Please read the details below carefully, and contact us if you have any questions.  The winners of the program will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Your assignment:

MUN clubs are charged with proposing realistic solutions to combat the impact of climate change on rising hunger and food insecurity in a Third World country you select.  What steps must be taken now by the international community and the selected country itself to mitigate these issues over the next 10 years?

Climate change feeds on pre-existing vulnerabilities, often leading to major existential collapse in affected communities.  This in turns fuels societal upheaval, rise of endemic disease, and political turmoil throughout developing nations.

For example major news networks are featuring the climate induced crisis in northern Kenya.  The Turkhana people are facing widespread famine as crops fail, livestock perish and previously abundant game die off largely due to unprecedented lack of water and rainfall.

Likewise in Ethiopia famine is an endemic feature of life now in the country, recurring regularly since the early 1970’s.  Degraded climate eco-systems, population growth, and food scarcity are widespread.  Weak leadership, 50 years of civil war, deforestation, depleted soil and the like have impacted food availability and nutritional needs of millions of people.

In framing your “solutions” MUN clubs are invited to feature ideas that could be new and different in your recommended approach, and therefore  hold promise for avoiding the elusive traps of the past.

Submission format:

Your submission needs to be digital, but you're encouraged to be as creative as possible!  PowerPoint, YouTube video, screenshots, etc.  Work as a team to come up with the idea, and then tell us and show us how this would work.

Due date:

Your submission is due Friday, February 18 by midnight to Mo Winograd at mowinograd973@gmail.com. You'll get a confirmation of receipt no later than February 20.  Since several entries have gone to spam in the past, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you promptly advise Mo if you've not gotten confirmation!  If you have questions, please email Mo at the address above.
