CHILD SOLDIERS

2020 Special Competition

This is your chance to work as a team, think outside the box, and earn some money for your school's Model U.N. program.  Please read the details below carefully, and contact us if you have any questions.  The winners of the program will be announced at the Friday afternoon awards ceremony on March 3, 2020.

Situation:

The current United Nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the eighth of which deals with Decent Work and Economic Growth.  The seventh target under that heading reads as follows:

8.7    Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.

Your assignment:

Focusing exclusively on child soldiers, pick one of these 3 countries that has the highest number of child soldiers and tell us what proactive steps the UN can take to force a significant decrease in child soldiers and include metrics of how what you propose as a possible solution can be measured, and how it can be made economically sustainable over the long haul.

Your submissions will be due, in writing, by Friday, February 21 at noon to Mo Winograd at mowinograd973@gmail.com. If you have questions, please email Mo.

Awards:

Monetary awards will be given to the schools placing first, second and third in the amounts of $500, $350, and $200 respectively.
